Causes

Cracks do not appear without a reason.

Cracks in walls, around windows and doors, or stepped cracks in brickwork, all point to underlying structural movement. Getting the repair right starts with diagnosing the cause correctly. The wrong treatment on the wrong cause makes the problem worse.

Nationserv delivers this diagnostic work as a Helifix approved installer, on residential and commercial properties across the South East and nationwide.

Common causes we diagnose

01Subsidence and ground movement
02Heave and clay shrinkage
03Freeze and thaw cycles
04Increased structural loads
05Door and window replacement
06Drain failure
07Large vegetation added or removed
08Impact damage and vehicle strikes

The Helibeam System

Masonry beaming. Without the demolition.

Where masonry has cracked and failed, the Helifix Helibeam System offers a structural solution without the need for demolition or rebuilding. Stainless steel helical bars of high tensile strength are installed horizontally into bed joints, bonded with cementitious thixotropic grout.

The bars tie the masonry together and create deep masonry beams that redistribute structural loads across the building. Where needed, additional helical ties provide crack stitching, lateral and vertical restraint. The system works on brick, block and stone.

FAQ

What homeowners and insurers ask about Helifix.

What causes cracks in walls and masonry? +

Cracks commonly arise from ground movement, subsidence, heave, freeze and thaw cycles, increased structural loads, the replacement of doors or windows, drain failure, or the addition or removal of large vegetation. Nationserv diagnoses the root cause before specifying any repair, because the wrong treatment on the wrong cause makes the problem worse.

What is the Helifix Helibeam System? +

The Helibeam System is a horizontal bed joint reinforcement method used where masonry has cracked and failed. Stainless steel helical bars of high tensile strength are installed with cementitious thixotropic grout, creating deep masonry beams that tie the structure together and redistribute loads. It is suitable for brick, block and stone.

Is Helifix cheaper than underpinning? +

In most cases, yes. The Helibeam System and Helifix crack stitching avoid the excavation, disruption and programme length of traditional underpinning. The property stays occupied, ground conditions are not disturbed, and after repointing the repair is virtually invisible. The cost and timeline benefits are significant.

Are Nationserv Helifix approved installers? +

Yes. Nationserv is a fully approved installer of Helifix Masonry Repair Systems. This means Helifix insurance backed guarantees are available on most projects, alongside free site visits and structural programmes tailored to the specific building.

Will my insurance policy cover Helifix crack repair? +

In most cases yes. Subsidence, heave and accidental impact damage are commonly covered under standard buildings insurance policies. Nationserv is the repair contractor, not the insurer, and works directly with insurers and loss adjusters, preparing full scope and cost reports, and delivering the works under insurer instruction with daily site reporting.

Which types of masonry can Helifix be used on? +

Helifix systems are suitable for all common masonry types including brick, block and stone. Helical bars, lateral ties and crack stitching can be specified for traditional Victorian brickwork, modern cavity wall construction, listed stone buildings and everything in between.

How long does a Helifix repair take? +

Most Helifix crack stitching and Helibeam System installations complete within a few days to two weeks depending on scope. Compared with underpinning, which can run months, the programme is short and the property typically stays occupied throughout.
